read my mind

I have to say I'm disappointed in the literature published in Singapore. The quality of the books are rather dismal, beginning with the covers. There are some of these that look like they're trying to imitate the covers of John Grisham books; They end up looking like the pirated copies of the John Grishams. The paper used in the books are not those you find in standard paperback novels, rather, they're your standard white paper, the kind that you use for photocopying documents.

The fiction? Mostly horror stories from that series of books whose name I cannot remember now. There are those books which I suppose deserve a closer look, but because of their packaging, people would pass them up. Only one I found today is a standard paperback novel. I'm interested in it because of its appearance. It's called 'The Rose of Singapore' by Peter Neville. Take a look: it's on Amazon.com.

Sorry if I sound like a ranting little whiner, but that's just my opinion. I really hope that Singapore literature can emerge, and become something Singaporeans are really proud of.
